About Us and our Dance School (Click here to expand and close)

The original school was founded in 1955 by Angus & Winifred Donaldson in Woking, St Johns Surrey and was then known as the Donaldsons School of Dance located at the Atlanta Ballroom Woking Surrey.Just 13 miles down the road in Aldershot Hampshire there was a Dance school called Ballroom Dance Academy run by Lesley and Shirley Howe, in 1960 Lesley and Shirley purchased the dance studio in Queens Road and with that moved their school there. Whilst Angus and Winifred continued on with their school in Woking, St Johns their son Colin was to open the Colin Donaldson School of Dancing at the Cove Ivy Leaf Club in Farnborough, throughout the 1970’s and beyond the school grew and grew and subsequently moved to a new premises in Camp Road Farnborough and with the move came the new name Hampshire Dancentre.

A few years later the Ballroom Dance Academy was sold to Robin and Ellen Lunn and was re-named the Diamonddancentre. A few years later when Jacqui and Colin married the Hampshire Dancentre purchased the Diamond dancentre in Queens Road and the school was named the Hampshire & Diamond Dancentre. In 1999 the school was re-named The Diamond Dancentre Ltd and is now known nationally for its excellence in Dance and is still thriving to this very day. In fact so well Colin & Jacqui in 2010 opened the new Diamonds Dance studio in Aldershot.

Throughout the years many social, medalist and open competitors have learned and trained at the Diamond Dancentre and we are proud to have many of our original customers still dancing and in some cases with their grand children dancing too.

Childrens Classes

Our aim is to build confidence and encourage character development, whilst achieving high standards in dance. If you would like to come along for a look or join or even just want a little more information please click on a link below or contact us.

I’m sure you are aware how busy the Saturday classes have become recently. Following the Presentation day we will no longer be running the ‘Musical Theatre’ class. The Saturday timetable will be adjusted slightly to give some classes more time. To look after our new customers we will be adding a Beginners Ballroom class at 2-15 – 3.00 p.m (Saturdays). Giving everybody more space for the progressive rhythms. This will also help our Friday and Monday pupils who have not covered the ballroom rhythms but would like to move to Saturdays and consider competing in the future.

Adult Classes

Our aim for adults is just the same for the children, with the addition of beginers social classes. The pupils in our under fives class at our Farnborough Dancentre work towards mini dance exams, based around a simplified version of ballroom, Latin and freestyle work. They take rosette exams under the International Dance Teachers Association (I.D.T.A) and classes use appropriate music to suit the age group. Under fives class is a smaller group of children, and has a high staff ratio to enable support at an appropriate level and pace.

When your child reaches five years of age, they will progress to the under eights class, or depending on the class structure and the ability of the child, these age groups are flexible. The teachers and helpers present in the classes will know your child, and advise you of the dates for rosette examinations, and whether they feel your child is ready for the test.

Parents are very welcome to watch during these sessions but we ask that you keep external noise to a minimum when the classes are running, and that you respect the teachers view in terms of taking examinations and progressing to the next class. We know the test expectations, and we will also know your child in respect of their level of dance attainment.

The pupils in our u16s classes can learn in many different genres of dance ranging from freestyle to Ballroom Dancing. The pupils can achieve high standards of dance whilst enjoying socialising and having fun. Many of our pupils are selected to represent their country either nationally or internationally.

We encourage all of our pupils to take part in competitions throughout the country, this enables them to not only compete against the best but also gives them chance to travel around the country.

We hold annual presentations where the kids are rewarded for their efforts throughout the year, we also get asked to perform at fetes, seminars, shows and parties as well as other special events to promote dance and our school, all of our teachers and helpers are trained by us and place importance on high standard of technical dance.

The pupils in our Friday night class at our Farnborough Dancentre range from age 8 to age 16, and learn in freestyle and Latin American grades.
Friday pupils are encouraged to take part in the annual presentations, and other competitions that we promote within the school, our teachers place importance on high standard of technical dance.

Saturday classes run the same way as Fridays, but include ballroom lessons at all levels and abilities. Saturday pupils work towards examinations and also concentrate more strongly on the competitive side of dance, maybe requesting additional lessons, or workshops to enhance their competitive stance.

Pupils from the Diamond Dancentre are known throughout the country as achieving very high standards within the competitive scene and are currently winners of many individual and team events. Each year the pupils have the opportunity of taking part in many festivals where they are able to represent the south east of England.

Street Dance /Freestyle / (Click to expand and close)

Street Dance

This class is very popular, During recent years, Street Dance has become more and more popular especially with the younger generation. So due to the popularity of this new style of dance we are currently running extra classes at Diamonds in Aldershot.

Street Dance is the generic term used to cover the various energetic styles of dance that originates on the streets under the influence of a popular and very expressive style of music provided by DJ’s and MC’s scratching and rapping on their portable sound systems.

Freestyle

Although combined with our Friday and Saturday classes at our Farnborough Dancentre, due to the popularity we now hold a alternative classes at Diamonds in Aldershot Freestyle which can apply to numerous dance types and can be defined as any style of dance where the moves are not thought out ahead and where no choreography of the moves occurs before the dance begins.

It is literally thinking on your feet in this sense, and freestyle dancing can exist in almost all dance forms. As freestyle implies, the dancer is free to make it up as he or she goes, though.

Taking place on a Monday, these classes run over a four / eight week course, and cover Latin American and Ballroom for Beginners, Improvers and advanced social dancers.
